A Taste of Two Cities

Step 3: Group Project – Explore the Influence of Migration on Cuisine

In your groups, create a project that highlights the cultural exchange between Japan and Brazil through food and migration. You may also compare this to how Turkish food has spread across Europe through Turkish immigration. Be sure to use at least three target vocabulary words in your project. You can choose one of the following formats:

Option 1: Infographic Poster Design an infographic that explains the cultural and culinary exchange between São Paulo and Hamamatsu. You can add a section comparing this with how Turkish food (like kebabs, baklava, and börek) has spread across Europe.

  • Use visuals and short descriptions to show how migration influenced the local food scenes in both cities, and compare it to Turkish food’s journey abroad. Include key historical moments and show how immigrant communities shaped food culture.

  • Use Canva www.canva.com for creating the infographic.

Option 2: Cultural Exchange Map

Create a digital map that highlights the key areas where Turkish culture and cuisine have influenced other countries through migration. Focus on how Turkish cuisine has become popular in European cities like Berlin, Paris, or Vienna.

  • Task: On the map, pinpoint restaurants, markets, or cultural centers that represent the spread and influence of Turkish food culture in major European cities. Discuss how these communities maintain their ancestral traditions while blending into new cultures.

  • Present your results

  • Use Google Maps or My Maps to create your digital map.

Option 3: Cultural Blog Post Write a blog post that tells the story of a traveler exploring both São Paulo and Hamamatsu, comparing it with how Turkish immigrants have influenced the food culture in European cities.

  • In your blog, include stories about the traveler partaking of various dishes in both cities, learning about the ancestral traditions behind the food. Explain how these experiences show the deep cultural connections between the two cities and how Turkish food plays a similar role in immigrant communities in Europe.

  • WordPress or Google Docs.
